tangerine orange curd + Nutella panini (via The Suitcase Chef)

We have Nutella issues in our house.

If you looked in our cupboards, you would find a jar (or three) of half-eaten Nutella, usually having been attacked by an unknown spoon in a moment of deep emotional need (also known as “the last hour before the kids go to bed”).

We’re always looking for new ways to use Nutella, a smooth combo of chocolate and hazelnut, whether using it in cakes or brownies, especially the quick and easy Nutella Fudge Brownies from our friend, Abby Dodge, and her Desserts 4 Today book, featured on many sites including Savory Sweet Life

But our most recent addition to the revolving Nutella dessert tray is panini with Nutella and orange curd.

We discovered this combo when we were asked to review the new Foodista cookbook, collection of recipes and profiles from some of the best food bloggers. It’s a special cookbook, and you can read our full review of the book on Cooks and Books and Recipes (we suggest you also bookmark that site because new cookbooks are constantly being reviewed and given away. It’s a great way to discover new books as they are published and maybe score a free book along the way).

We chose three recipes to test to make sure the Foodista recipes were as tasty as we hoped. And they were. One of the three recipes was for “Orangette” Tea Sandwiches from Brittan at The Suitcase Chef. The recipe features the Korean hallabong fruit, which isn’t readily available here in New Jersey, so Brittan offered a substitution of fresh tangerine and orange juice. Easy enough, we thought. And it was. If you like lemon curd, you’re going to love Brittan’s tangerine orange curd even more.

The real magic of this recipe is pairing the orange curd with Nutella, and then shoving a sandwich full of the combo, and then throwing it into the panini maker. Who thinks of that? We’re approaching genius here, Brittan. We had never had dessert panini before this, but we’re sure they won’t be our last.

If you don’t have a panini maker, a grilled/toasted sandwich of the Nutella + orange curd will work just fine. More than fine.

Next time we make this, I’ll add in some small chocolate chunks into the sandwiches. because why not?

One more note - The best thing about the Foodista book was discovering a bunch of new food bloggers, like Brittan. Her site is such a wonderful find. We’ve read every post of hers, and it’s an incredible collection of her journeys through Korea and elsewhere. Go discover something wonderful...

This looks awesome. I'm dipping orange slices into some microwaved nutella to replicate it. It's not the same.

Oh my. Melty citrus-y Nutella goodness. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I'm in love. Year-end Nutella party for the win!

Oh, nom nom nom! What a delightful combination, and thanks for the tips on the sites.

You almost had me... I am not a fan of chocolate and citrus together. While I can't comment on your Nutella addiction, I can say that the curd is really tempting me from my break-up with sugar.

This sounds like a fabulous combo! Yum. I love trying flavors like this... Happy New Year!

Want. Nutella fills and soothes emotional upset in a way that a regular chocolate simply cannot. I have a very sad story about Nutella that I won't relate because well, it's sad but it's cemented my love for Nutella by the spoonful.

Love Nutella...we do a plain white bread points with crust trimmed, run through paninni press then sprinkled with powdered sugar. Great for a quick winter snack!

So much for my New Year's resolution!! I am crazy for nutella and also crazy for citrus with chocolate... so there is really just no hope for me, is there!!

Wishing you and yours a happy, healthy and joyous 2011!!

We love panini sandwhiches in this house but have never once thought of making a dessert one. Brilliant! Thank you.
